A new video format means less buffering and more watching

(BBC 7/7/2020) There's a new video coding technology that uses half the data. The days of slow, buffering videos are soon gone. The codec, which is called H.266and Versatile Video Coding (VCC), was announced by Germany's Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute.
Many large companies had a hand in its development, including Apple and Microsoft - to name a few. But it could be a while before we see this technology in consumer products. Phones and computers will need new chips to keep up with the new technology.
In nerd terms, H.266 is designed require half the bitrate (the amount of data transmitted per second). In order to stream 8K video, tests have indicated that homes would require internet connections capable of more than 85 megabits per second - beyond of what many properties have today.
In addition to faster speeds, you'll also be able to save double the amount with the same amount of space. Everyone wants to get their hands on it. Between streaming, TV, video games, virtual reality, and mobile, 8K will have to be adopted across the board. It might take a while, but we think it'll be worth it.
