(CNET July 7, 2020) Since coronavirus, delivery apps have seen a surge in use - grocery apps in particular. Uber announced on Tuesday that it's adding grocery delivery to its app in several cities across the Americas.

Uber is in collaboration with the Chile-based grocery delivery startup Cornershop, and they bought a majority investment in last October. The acquisition has been approved by the Chilean authorities but it still pending regulatory approval in Mexico.

With less people visitng grocery stores amid the pandemic, many now rely on grocery delivery apps to get their food. Instacart, Doordash and Grubhub use have all skyrocketed over the past few months. This is a good thing because Uber's ride side of the business has plummeted. Good thing for Uber Eats, which has seen orders go up more than 100% since last year.

Uber has already been experimenting with grocery orders in other countries and have already seen a 176% increase since February. Cornershop is now doing more than 1 million orders a month.

On-demand food delivery is competitve - Grubhub, Caviar, Seamless, and Doordash - all in the same market. Instacart and Amazon offer grocery deliveries. Uber's grocery will launch later this month in the US in Miami and Dallas, and they plan to make the service available worldwide.
