New mass Twitter hack provides a wake-up call
Jumping Trout, LLC
(CNET, July 17, 2020) Earlier this week, tweets were sent from Joe Biden, Kanye West, and other psuedo-political figures telling the public they'd send other Twitter users bitcoins as a donation to the community. Obviously, this wasn't true - these people were hacked.
On Wednesday, a tweet from Joe Biden's account offered double the amount of bitcoin sent to a particular address. The accounts of Barack Obama, Mike Bloomberg, and Kanye West were also affected. But politicians weren't the only figures attacked, the accounts of Apple, Elon Musk (Tesla's CEO), Jeff Bezos, and Bill Gates were also hacked.
The attacked wasn't seen by Twitter until it was too late. Hackers were able to bypass Twitters 'extra' security measures, showing how easy it is for public figures to inflence the public, even if they aren't the ones doing it.
With an election on the horizon, it's important to remember to stay informed off the internet, and always remember your sources. Social media was a huge hot topic in the last presidential election. We should all remember to question everything we see and hear, especially on social media.
Stay informed! Stay safe.
