(Business Insider, August 4, 2020) Happy Tuesday! Here are some things you need to know to keep up in the world of tech. There's lots of news out there, so here's a list.
1. TikTok has until September to find a buyer. The president said last week that the chinese company behind the video app needs to sell their rights to a US company, or face being banned. The scrutiny came from privacy conerns of data sharing of US users to the China's government. It has not been confirmed that information is being shared, but the US government wants to shut down the app.
2. TikTok's owner is looking for a new headquarters outside the US. ByteDance, the chinese company that services the app, says it's looking at re-establishing itself as a global company.
3. Tommy Francois, an Ubisoft executive, was fired after sexual harrassment accusations. A source told Business Insider that he was fired after an internal investigation into sexual harrassment complaints.
4. Google released the new Pixel 4a. This phone comes with a 12.2 megapixel camera and costs $350.
5. Twitter could be facing a $250 million fine over allegations that it improperly targeted ads. The FTC is looking to fine Twitter after they were alerted that Twitter improperly targeted ads based on information they had provided for "safety and security" reasons, which violates a 2011 agreement.
6. Garmin reportedly paid hackers a multimillion dollar ransom. The GPS company was hacked a couple weeks ago, which left their services offline. This was a ransomware attack by the company Evil Corp, a russian hacking organization. In order to get important files back, Garmin supposedly paid the multimillion dollar ransom.
7. Tesla is working on a new pickup truck, according to Elon Musk. If the Cybertruck doesn't sell, the Tesla CEO says that they will sell a regular pickup truck as a backup plan - people might not be receptive to the interesting design of the Cybertruck.
8. Amazon is facing an antitrust investigation. The FTC and attorneys general in New York and California are leading an investigation into Amazon's marketplace. Little detail is available on what the problem is.
9. Snapchat is rolling out a new feature that allows you to play songs over your videos. Much like TikTok, Snapchat will now have this feature, just as TikTok is on the brink of banishment.
10. If you're traveling to Singapore, you'll have to wear an electronic tag. The government is enforcing visitors to wear tags to help enforce quarantine and social distancing. Punishments for non-comliance could cost you upwars of $7,000, six months of imprisonment, or both.
